“Mr. Meacham, this weekend, 250th anniversary of the United States of America….I'd like to tell you a little story, and perhaps you could lend me some commonsense reaction to it. The other day I had a doctor's appointment, and I'm walking through the halls of Massachusetts General Hospital—one of the finest institutions, medical institutions, in the world—and it was the day after the Temporary Status Protection Act was basically ripped apart by the Supreme Court. And hospitals, a large many hospitals, depend on people from Haiti and other countries as employees. And I'm wondering as I walked through the hallways, what has happened to this country that elements of our government seem so unfriendly towards its citizens, and yet the citizens themselves continue each and every day getting up, going to work, earning a pay check, taking care of their families like responsible Americans. What Is going on?” asks veteran columnist Mike Barnicle of presidential historian Jon Meacham, who discusses why America should “try to recover this sense of mercy and forgiveness.”
